An explaination of a previous posting, why IV is my favorite. On the previous 3 albums there was a definite link with Jimi Hendrix, particularly Electric Ladyland. By that I mean the music was based on Jimi's music, chords, song formation, album layout musically, etc. On IV Frank began to assert his own brand of Rock & Roll, he began to sound like Frank without Jimi. That, to me, is why he has such a following. Frank became Frank. And that is why I just love his music. Robin Trower started to sound like Jimi, but quickly became Robin. When Frank became Frank his music quality quickly came through. He really began to show what he is capable of. I have been a fan since the early days, but his work starting with IV went into a whole new dimension of intensity, quality.
A quick note: Frank has not had a bad album. Even Led Zeppelin couldn't say that. Yes I said Led Zeppelin. Again, my opinion, starting with Presence the quality of Zep's music declined appreciably. Frank's has only gotten better. A lot of the time when I listen I start with IV and it just gets better. Jimi's strength was his live material, although I love Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland. When he put out Are You Experienced it was the start of a new era in rock & roll. Even the likes of Pete Townsend had praise for Jimi when he started in Britain. Pete introduced Eric Clapton to Jimi by saying Jimi would put them out of business. And he almost did. Jimi got praise from Paul M. Yes that Paul. He heard Jimi do a cover of one the songs off Sgt. Pepper a couple of days after the album was released and gave Jimi nothing but praise.
Back to Frank. You can hear portions of his own style on the first 3, but with IV and after it was definitely Frank. I put him at an even keel with Rush's first 8 albums. The next 4 weren't so great, but starting with Presto they went back to what got them where they are. The past 20 years we have inundated with live albums from Rush. But that's not a bad thing. A bad Rush live is better than most bands good. At least they change the order of songs presented. Frank does the same thing. His live albums are nothing short of great. It's not easy keeping up the quality of your music. He has. He must spend a lot of time going over material for his albums. It shows.
I can't wait until your next offering. Keep it up!
